In today’s interconnected world, volunteering across borders is more than a personal journey — it is a tool for shared learning, capacity building, and development cooperation. The Voluntary Aid and Development Organisation (VADO) created the Volunteer Abroad Program to connect professionals, social entrepreneurs, change makers, students, and skilled individuals with impactful projects abroad under its International Volunteer Exchange and Placements (IVEP) initiative.

Through this initiative, VADO promotes inclusive mobility and global solidarity and by enabling individuals to contribute their expertise to international development efforts while gaining valuable cross-cultural and service-learning experiences.

About the Initiative

The International Volunteer Exchange and Placements (IVEP) program facilitates short and long-term international volunteer assignments in collaboration with non-profits, social enterprises, and local development partners in host countries.

Participants are matched with host organizations where they engage in projects that strengthen community systems, skills / knowledge transfer, and promote sustainable impact. Each placement is designed to balance service contribution with experiential learning, ensuring mutual benefit between volunteers and host communities.

Focus Areas:

At VADO, there are no limits to where your skills can make a difference. Our international volunteer placements span diverse sectors — from education, health, environment, agriculture, legal / social justice, governance, gender equality, youth empowerment, and community development, to innovation, digital inclusion, and humanitarian response. Whether you are a professional, student, or changemaker, VADO will find and match you with projects that align with your interests, expertise, and personal growth goals, ensuring every placement delivers meaningful impact to the host community and valuable experience for you.

Impact and Benefits

International volunteering provides far-reaching benefits:

  • Expands global exposure and cross-cultural competencies for participants
  • Strengthens local institutions through technical assistance
  • Builds international cooperation and people-to-people diplomacy
  • Creates employment pathways through transferable skills and global networks

By promoting international volunteer opportunities, VADO contributes to a new form of development diplomacy — where citizens exchange service for knowledge, solidarity, and shared progress. This approach aligns with the UNV’s State of the World’s Volunteerism Report (2022), which highlights the role of volunteer exchange in strengthening international cooperation.
